Paper or canvas? Choosing the right finish for your space

One of the questions we’re asked most often in the gallery is:
What’s the difference between a paper print and a canvas print?
The simple answer is that both are beautiful, high-quality options. The best choice depends on the look, feel and practicality you want for your space.
A fine art paper print offers crisp detail, rich colour and a refined finish. A canvas print has a softer, more textured, gallery-style presence and is often the best choice for larger pieces or rooms with lots of natural light.
Here’s how to decide which option is right for your home.
What is a paper print?
A paper print is artwork printed on archival-quality fine art paper. It has a smooth surface and tends to produce a crisp, detailed image with beautiful colour depth and tonal variation.
Because of this, paper prints often have a refined and elegant feel. They work beautifully in bedrooms, hallways, studies and styled gallery walls, especially when framed thoughtfully.
At SEA Gallery, our paper prints are available in sizes from A4 to A1, making them easy to frame using standard ready-made frames if desired.
Benefits of paper prints
Paper prints are a wonderful option if you’re looking for a detailed, affordable and flexible way to bring art into your home.
They are:
- More affordable to produce
- Archival quality
- Crisp and highly detailed
- Rich in colour depth and tonal variation
- Smooth and refined in finish
- Easy to frame in standard sizes
- Beautiful for gallery walls and smaller spaces
The main thing to keep in mind is that paper prints need protection. They should be framed behind glass or perspex to prevent damage from dust, fingerprints and moisture.
In tropical or coastal climates like Port Douglas, it’s also important that the back of the frame is properly sealed to help protect the artwork from moisture and mould over time.

What is a canvas print?
A canvas print is artwork printed on canvas, then professionally finished so it can be displayed without glass or perspex.
Canvas has a soft matte finish and subtle texture, giving the artwork a more organic, painterly feel. It sits beautifully within an interior and often creates a more elevated, gallery-style look.
Each SEA Gallery canvas print is professionally varnished to help protect it from the elements, making canvas a beautiful option for coastal homes and spaces where durability matters.
Benefits of canvas prints
Canvas prints are a great choice when you want presence, texture and visual impact.
They are:
- Soft and matte in finish
- Textured and organic in feel
- Professionally varnished for protection
- Ideal for coastal homes
- Less reflective than glass-framed prints
- Beautiful for larger artworks and feature walls
- Available in premium framing options
Because canvas prints don’t require glass or perspex, there is far less glare. This means you can enjoy the artwork clearly from different angles, even in rooms with lots of natural light.
Our canvas prints range from 45cm x 65cm through to 2m x 1m, making them especially well suited to larger walls and statement pieces.
Stretched canvas vs floating framed canvas
Canvas prints can be finished in two ways: stretched canvas or floating framed canvas.
A stretched canvas has a clean, modern finish. The canvas is stretched around a timber frame and is ready to hang. It’s a beautiful, more budget-friendly option that still gives the artwork presence.
A floating framed canvas adds an extra level of depth and refinement. The canvas sits inside a frame with a small gap around the edge, creating the appearance that the artwork is floating. This gives the piece a more premium, gallery-style finish.
Both options are beautiful. The right choice depends on the look you want and where the artwork will live.
Paper vs canvas prints: which should you choose?
Start by thinking about the room, the size of the artwork and how the space is used.
If the room receives a lot of natural light or glare, canvas is often the best option. Because there is no glass or perspex, the artwork can be viewed clearly without reflections interrupting the image.
For children’s rooms, paper prints framed behind perspex can be a practical choice. Perspex is durable, easy to clean and better suited to spaces where little hands might reach or accidents may happen.
If you’re working with a large wall, canvas is usually our recommendation. The soft matte finish creates impact without feeling overwhelming, and for oversized pieces, canvas can often be the most cost-effective way to fill a wall beautifully.
For bedrooms, studies and gallery walls, paper prints can work especially well. Their crisp detail and refined finish suit more intimate spaces and allow you to create a considered collection over time.
Best option for coastal homes and holiday homes
For coastal homes, holiday houses and Airbnbs, durability is an important consideration.
Canvas is often a strong choice because it is varnished, doesn’t require glass and is less affected by glare. It also brings warmth and texture into a room, which works beautifully in relaxed coastal interiors.
Paper prints can also be a great option for holiday homes when they are professionally framed and sealed correctly. They’re an effective way to refresh a space, especially when paired with fresh linen, natural textures and thoughtful styling.
Often, it’s these finishing details that transform a room from tired to inviting, and make a stay feel more memorable for guests.
Is canvas or paper better?
There is no single better option. It depends on what you want the artwork to do in your space.
Choose paper prints if you want crisp detail, rich colour variation, a smooth finish and a more affordable framing option.
Choose canvas prints if you want texture, scale, durability, low reflection and a more elevated gallery-style finish.
Both paper and canvas prints are designed to bring the feeling of the reef, coast and tropics into your home. The right choice simply depends on how you want that feeling to live in your space.
